Smart Education in Ireland : Apple to create 1,000 jobs in Co Cork site expansion

Apple is to create 1,000 jobs in Ireland, the country's state investment agency has said.

The tech giant is adding a new building to its site in Hollyhill, Co Cork, which will include new office space for the staff by the middle of 2017, the IDA announced.

As the company's chief executive, Tim Cook, visited Ireland, plans were also revealed for a link-up with the country's Sustainable Energy Authority to research offshore energy technology.

A one million euro (£710,000) Ocean Energy Industry Fund is to be set up under the initiative, aimed at finding new ways of capturing wave energy and converting it to renewable electricity.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny said Apple's plans for new facilities which can house a further 1,000 employees is a very welcome boost of confidence in Cork and the south west region.

"These new jobs come on top of 1,000 additional jobs already created at Apple in the past 12 months, which brought the workforce in Ireland to over 5,000 in 2015," he said.

"This continued expansion by the company is testament to the quality of the talent pool, the infrastructure and the business environment that this country has to offer and further cements Apple as one of the leading employers in Ireland."

Apple has had a presence in Ireland since 1980, when the company opened its first facility in Cork.

Separately, 300 jobs are to be created with the expansion of a recruitment company in Dublin.

Indeed, a jobs search website, said it will take on the new staff at its Europe, Middle East and Africa headquarters in the Irish capital over the next two years.

It has already started hiring for sales, client services, business development, marketing, finance and operations positions.

Chris Hyams, president of Indeed, said the expansion indicates the company's long-term commitment to Ireland and confidence in the workforce and economy.

"When we opened our Irish office in 2012 we had ambitious growth plans for Indeed and Ireland has played an integral role in our international expansion, " he said.

"We now have 230 employees, representing 18 nationalities, in our Dublin office, serving jobseekers and employers all over the world.

"We plan to more than double the size of our Irish team by 2017 to continue to expand globally, find better ways to match candidates with employers, and make it easier for people to get jobs."

"Ireland is emerging the best place to study nowadays...many students are selecting Ireland because the country offers many good reasons which no other country till now offers", says Mr. Deepak, Education Manager, Career XL Services..
