Smart Education in Canada : Cambrian College ranked among Canada’s best; top in northern Ontario in applied research

SUDBURY – Cambrian College has achieved a higher ranking on a list of Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges, as determined The ranking compares colleges that are engaged in applied research projects by research income from industry and government sources. In its 2014 fiscal year, Cambrian secured $1.56 million in research income, which is a 5 percent increase over the 2013 fiscal year. As a result, the College has risen to 34 on the list, up two spots from last year’s ranking. Cambrian is the only college in northern Ontario to make the list.

“Research activity at Cambrian takes place within Cambrian Innovates, the applied research arm of the College, and the Northern Ontario Assessment and Resource Centre (NOARC), a consortium formed by the region’s 11 colleges and universities.

Rising two spots on the Top 50 list puts Cambrian in very good company because it proves that we are among the most innovative colleges in Canada, and we’re continuing to grow a culture of innovation,” said Emile Malvaso, Chair, Centre of Excellence for Innovation and Enterprise at Cambrian College.

“Our faculty and students find it extremely rewarding to move innovative ideas and projects forward with industry and government funding partners. The growth that we have experienced is a reflection of the need to find flexible and creative solutions to industry challenges. We’re always happy to tackle new projects and apply our unique resources, which include talented faculty and students, dedicated space, and equipment,” Malvaso continued.

Since 2009 Cambrian Innovates has completed more than 100 successful projects. Many of those have assisted partners in the mining supply and services sector, specifically in process improvements and prototype development, building materials science and testing, and mine ventilation. The College’s applied research division also works with partners in other sectors, including health, marketing and design, and computer and web programming.

Also located at Cambrian’s Barrydowne campus, NOARC’s research focuses on how to best support academic success for individuals with learning disabilities and associated disorders. Projects conducted to date have focused on gathering normative data, developing new measurement tools, understanding the factors that contribute to academic transitions, investigating the efficacy of assistive technology, and surveying the needs of postsecondary students and staff. NOARC is also building a track record of article publication in both Canadian and international peer-reviewed journals.
