Smart Education in Canada : Significant Demand, Shortage of Workers in Local Manufacturing Sector; Job Fair Connects Students With Employers

Windsor, ON - Several local manufacturing employers were at St. Clair's South Campus participating in a job fair Wednesday.

There were 25 local companies in the manufacturing field at the Fourth Annual Manufacturing Job Fair. They set up booths in the Hangar and current students from the Pre-Apprenticeship CNC Industrial Mechanic Millwright and Industrial Mechanic programs were able to meet with them, pass out resumes and discuss future job prospects.

Nour Hachem, Pre-Apprenticeship Project Manager for St. Clair, said the manufacturing job fair continues to grow each year.

There's a significant demand and shortage of workers in the local manufacturing sector, said Hachem, which are great reasons to hold the annual job fair.

"What better way to connect the training that we offer here at St. Clair College with industry's needs," said Hachem about the job fair. "It's a wonderful opportunity that takes students straight from training into employment, and that is our ultimate goal."

St. Clair Pre-Apprenticeship CNC Industrial Mechanic Millwright student Cheryl Dewit said she was overwhelmed by all the diverse job opportunities the local companies had available and were promoting at Wednesday's job fair.

"I'm interested in electrical and the building aspects, whereas some of my other classmates like the CNC and stuff like that, so it's nice there are a lot of different jobs available," said Dewit. "I think it's amazing to get all these employers under one roof for us pre-apprenticeship people to touch base on what jobs are out there and show them some of our experience through what we've already learned in the program."

This wasn't the first time Louis Jahn from Jahn Engineering participated in the manufacturing job fair, and he said it won't be the last.

"After last year's job fair, we hired four students, and they're all still with us and doing very well," said Jahn, adding that two of them have already been promoted. He said each year at the job fair, he always comes across many good candidates for positions in his company.

"They already know they want to be in this career, so we already know they're interested, and they have some basic training, so it's great," said Jahn. "It's a great opportunity for both them and us."
