Smart Education in Canada : CBU’s Engineering Technology Students Being Trained with Cutting-edge Technology Software

Cape Breton University (CBU) has recently secured a three-year licence for one of the most powerful electrical software programs available to date. ‘ETAP Electrical Simulation Software’ is used by the top 10 engineering firms in the world and 97 per cent of US nuclear power plants. It’s making the workplace safer and cutting cost during the design stage. With this software, CBU has the ability to adjust quickly to meet the needs of industry.

Bachelor of Engineering Technology (BET) students studying at CBU will gain valuable experience using the software, providing them with a competitive edge when entering the workforce. The software allows students to model industrial electrical systems that are found in every industry from hospitals, power plants, renewable energy facilities, military facilities to name a few. It’s typically used during the design stage and updated throughout the life of a facility. Some functions include power flow, electrical safety and optimization of systems. Designing and working on electrical systems takes highly trained people that follow the proper procedures and ensure all codes and standards are met – this software helps meet those requirements.

“Demand for people with the skills learned from using this software is through the roof. With more than 5000 companies using the software, that’s 5000 companies looking to employ students like ours. With a commercial value of more than $750,000 it’s a serious tool/investment that companies want qualified people using,” says CBU Engineering Technology Professor, Blair MacInnis, P.Eng.

The software will incorporate hands on experience that is essential to the engineering technology program. Students have begun to work with ETP software during both class and lab time. Students will be given a system to design using the applicable codes; once it’s designed they will model it and make any changes based on the results.

“I’ve been using the ETAP software both in the lab at CBU and in the commissioning field. The software is definitely a resource which will benefit present and future BET students. Having experience working with this program provides BET students with a foundation of skills currently in demand in the construction, commissioning and engineering field. In my opinion this program along with other relevant courses we are receiving here at CBU will provide many opportunities for students to secure the meaningful employment they are seeking upon graduation,” says BET student, Floyd Reddick.
