Smart Education in UK : 6.87 million Euros study to significantly enhance the efficiency of Europe’s mobile networks

UWS is playing a key role in a €6.87 million collaborative European project which will result in better mobile networks across Europe.

UWS is the lead academic institution of this major European project, with Dr Jose M Alcaraz Calero and Dr Qi Wang of the University’s Artificial intelligence, Visual Communication and Networks (AVCN) research centre being co-technical leaders and co-principal investigators of this research project.

The three year study, which got underway in July and is funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 - Research and Innovation Framework Programme, sees UWS along with 12 other EU partners, spanning seven countries, working to significantly improve the performance of Europe’s mobile network by means of novel 5G technologies.

This project, ‘SELFNET: Framework for Self-Organised Network Management in Virtualized and Software Defined Networks’, will focus on the design and implementation of a smart network management framework which has self-organising capabilities and can manage network infrastructures by automatically detecting and mitigating a range of common network problems that are currently still being manually addressed by network operators, thereby significantly reducing operational costs and improving user experience in new 5G mobile technologies.

The complex network management operations being responded to by this automated system will include self-protection capabilities against distributed cyber-attacks, self-healing capabilities against network failures, and self-optimization of network application traffic.

Dr Jose M. Alcaraz Calero said: “We are delighted to play a leading role in this project which aims to significantly improve the performance of the network, the cost-efficiency of infrastructure maintenance, and the quality of experience of mobile users across Europe.”

Dr Qi Wang added said: “We expect that the project will contribute significantly to the advancement of the network management in mobile networks globally, with the outcomes being implemented internationally by network providers.”
