UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) ranked No. 2 public university, No. 8 overall, in first U.S. News and World Report ‘Best Global Universities’



The survey ranked 500 universities from 49 countries, using 10 weighted indicators to measure each university’s global research performance. UCLA ranked highly in several of these indicators, including global research (No. 9) and number of highly cited papers (No. 15).

UCLA also was named among the very best programs in several of the survey’s 20 subject rankings: mathematics (No. 4), psychiatry and psychology (No. 4), chemistry (No. 5), clinical medicine (No. 7), and social science and public health (No. 7).

In all, seven University of California campuses were included in the rankings: UC Berkeley (No. 3), UC San Diego (No. 18), UC San Francisco (No. 22), UC Santa Barbara (No. 28), UC Davis (No. 37), UC Santa Cruz (No. 63) and UC Irvine (No. 66).

The new global rankings follow the publication’s release last month of its annual rankings of .In that report, UCLA ranked No. 2 among the nation’s best public universities and No. 23 overall.

UCLA has consistently performed very well in a variety of other recent rankings. Earlier this month, UCLA ranked No. 12 among the top 400 universities worldwide in the 2014–15 . In August, No. 1 in its ranking of “affordable elite” universities and No. 5 in its list of national universities that contribute to serving the public interest. Also in August, Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s ranked UCLA second among U.S. public institutions and No. 12 overall.
