Lambton College wins the 2015 Capital One Financial Education Challenge for empowering vulnerable women.

TORONTO,

Lambton College has been named the 2015 Capital One® Financial Education Challenge National Champion by this country’s largest student leadership development organization, Enactus Canada, and proud supporter Capital One Canada. In the past year, 8,000 Canadians have benefited from the financial education programs created by the post-secondary students participating in this national competition.

The Enactus team from Lambton College embodied the values of financial education to win this challenge by strengthening the financial situation of 70 vulnerable women.

“This challenge is about encouraging the next generation of leaders to think boldly about how to tackle an issue that affects many Canadians,” said Ian Hanning, Chief Financial Officer, Capital One Canada. “Lambton College rose to the challenge with a very innovative program that improved the quality of life of the participants. We want to continue fostering this kind of creativity in order to help Canadians make smart financial choices.”

Enactus Lambton College’s project Strength In Numbers taught 70 women how to manage their money and increased their awareness of where their money was being spent, resulting in $84,600 in debt reduction and $28,200 in savings. In addition, 49 of these women have secured employment or been empowered to return to school.

“Financial education is vital for strengthening communities across the country and Enactus Lambton College is making these skills available to vulnerable women,” said Nicole Almond, Enactus Canada president. “The results of their engaging and effective project are undeniable and have positively impacted women through financial literacy skill development.”

The 2015 Enactus Canada National Exposition welcomed more than 1,200 delegates including the country’s brightest university and college students, academic professionals and top Canadian CEOs supporting entrepreneurial action through competition, recognition and education. The national competition took place at the 2015 Enactus Canada National Exposition in Toronto.
